Sustainable & Ethical Baby Clothes

Sustainable and ethical baby clothes aren't about a single fabric or a green label. They're clothes that are made responsibly, by people who are treated fairly, worn often, and handed on rather than thrown away.

Babies outgrow clothes in weeks, which makes baby clothing one of the most wasteful corners of fashion. This page explains how we think about sustainability at Lucy & Sam, what to look for when you're buying eco friendly baby clothes anywhere, and where to find everything we've written on the subject.

What makes baby clothes sustainable?

Certified fibre

Every Lucy & Sam piece is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton: grown without synthetic pesticides and processed under strict chemical, environmental and social rules. What GOTS means.

Made to last

The most sustainable garment is the one that survives to a second and third child. We design for repeated washing, not one season.

Gender neutral by design

Unisex prints pass between siblings and cousins whatever their gender. Shop gender neutral.

Kept in use

Pass clothes on, sell them, or send them back through our pre-loved and SuperLooper schemes.

A word on green claims. 'Eco', 'natural' and 'sustainable' aren't regulated terms on clothing. Look for something you can check, such as GOTS certification for organic fibre, and be wary of claims you can't.

Is organic cotton worth it?

For the planet, organic cotton farming avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and builds healthier soil. For your baby, GOTS certification means fabric processed without chlorine bleach, formaldehyde-based finishes or restricted azo dyes. It costs more, so we'd prioritise it for the base layers your baby wears most. We've written an honest answer in is organic cotton better for babies? and a fabric-by-fabric comparison in the best fabric for baby clothes.

Ethical baby clothes: who made them, and how

Ethical baby clothing is about the people in the supply chain as well as the planet. GOTS certification is one of the few labels that covers both. Alongside its environmental rules, it sets social criteria for every factory that processes the cotton, based on International Labour Organization conventions, and checks them with annual on-site inspections. That's why we use it for every Lucy & Sam garment, rather than relying on words like 'ethical' or 'responsible' that anyone can print on a label.

The same applies to ethical children's clothes as your baby grows: our organic kids clothes for ages 2 to 6 are made to exactly the same standard.

Eco friendly baby clothes, from fibre to front door

Eco friendly baby clothes go beyond the fabric. Our orders ship in plastic-free packaging, our prints are gender neutral so they can be worn by more than one child, and our care advice is built around washing at 30°C and air drying, which uses less energy and keeps cotton in use for longer. If you're comparing eco baby clothes brands, look for certification you can check, clothes that will survive more than one child, and a plan for what happens when they're outgrown.

Buy less, choose better

The most effective way to make a baby wardrobe more sustainable is simply to buy fewer things. A small capsule of pieces that all go together, in the right sizes, goes further than a drawer full of outfits that are worn once.

Make them last

Washing cool, skipping the softener and air-drying keep cotton soft and in shape for years. Read how to wash baby clothes so they last.

When they're outgrown

Pass them on, sell them, or swap them. Our guides to pre-loved baby clothes and what to do with unwanted baby clothes cover every option, from hand-me-downs to textile recycling.

Common questions

What are sustainable baby clothes?

Clothes made from responsibly produced fibre, ideally with certification you can check such as GOTS, built to last through many washes, and kept in use by passing them on, reselling or recycling them.

Is organic cotton worth it?

Organic cotton avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, and GOTS certification limits the chemicals used in processing. It costs more, so it is most worth it for base layers worn against the skin every day.

What makes baby clothes eco friendly?

Certified fibre, durable construction, unisex designs that can be handed down, low-impact washing and keeping clothes in use for as long as possible.

What are ethical baby clothes?

Baby clothes made in a way that is fair to the people who produce them as well as gentle on the planet. Look for independent certification such as GOTS, which audits social criteria for workers as well as environmental rules.

Where can I buy ethical baby clothes in the UK?

Look for UK brands that can show independent certification rather than just using the word 'ethical'. Every Lucy & Sam garment is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, designed in the UK and sent in plastic-free packaging.
