Newborn Essentials Checklist (UK): What You Actually Need

Newborn Essentials Checklist (UK): What You Actually Need

Every newborn essentials list on the internet seems to run to a hundred items. Most of them you won't need, some you'll be given, and a few you'll wish someone had told you to buy twice.

This is a practical checklist for UK parents: the clothes, sleep, feeding and changing basics for the first six to eight weeks, with sensible quantities. Tick it off, ignore the rest, and spend the money you save on takeaway.

Flat lay of newborn essentials: folded organic cotton sleepsuits and bodysuits, muslins, a knitted hat, scratch mitts, socks, a hooded towel and a baby sleeping bag

A quick rule before you start: buy fewer things in the newborn size than you think. Babies grow fastest in the first few months, and 0–3 months is the size most likely to be outgrown before it's worn, and the one most likely to arrive as gifts.

Newborn clothes checklist

Most full-term babies go straight into 0–3 months. If your baby is expected to be small, keep a couple of tiny baby or newborn pieces on standby.

  • Sleepsuits / babygrows 6–8
Your baby will live in these day and night. Zips and two-way poppers make night changes much faster.
  • Short- or long-sleeved bodysuits (vests) 6–8
The layer under everything. Envelope necks pull down over the shoulders when a nappy leaks.
  • Cardigans or light jackets 2
  • Pramsuit or snowsuit, if your baby is born in autumn or winter 1
  • Hats for outdoors 2
Outdoors only. Take hats off as soon as you come inside.
  • Socks or booties, if your sleepsuits are footless 4–6 pairs
  • Scratch mitts 2 pairs
  • A coming-home outfit 1
A soft sleepsuit and a hat is all it needs to be.

Sleep essentials

  • Moses basket, next-to-me crib or cot with a new, firm, flat mattress 1
  • Fitted sheets for the mattress 3–4
  • Baby sleeping bags in the right TOG for the season 2
Check the minimum weight on the label: many start from around 4kg, so you may need cellular blankets for the first weeks.
  • Lightweight cellular blankets 2–3
  • Room thermometer 1
The Lullaby Trust recommends a room temperature of 16–20°C.

Feeding and burping

  • Muslin cloths 8–10
The single most useful thing you'll own. Burp cloth, bib, sunshade, emergency changing mat.
  • Bibs 4–6
  • If breastfeeding: nursing bras, breast pads and a feeding pillow if you find it comfortable
  • If bottle feeding: 6–8 bottles, first-stage formula, a steriliser and a bottle brush

Changing and bathing

  • Newborn nappies, plus a pack in size 1 2 packs
  • Water-based wipes or cotton wool plenty
  • Nappy cream
  • Changing mat 1
  • Soft hooded towels 2
  • Baby bath or bath support 1
  • Mild, fragrance-free wash for later. Plain water is all newborn skin needs for the first weeks.

Out and about

  • Rear-facing infant car seat, fitted before your due date 1
You'll need it to drive home from hospital.
  • Pram or pushchair suitable from birth, lying flat 1
  • Changing bag 1
  • Sling or carrier, if you'll use one optional

What you can skip (or wait on)

  • Shoes. Babies don't need them until they're walking.
  • Cot bumpers, pillows and duvets. These are not recommended for safer sleep.
  • A full wardrobe in 0–3 months. Buy the basics and wait to see what you're given.
  • Baby toiletries. Newborn skin is best washed with plain water for the first few weeks.
  • Wipe warmers, bottle prep machines and gadgets. Lovely if you want them, not essential.

Why we'd spend a little more on the clothes worn closest to skin

Sleepsuits and bodysuits are against your baby's bare skin around the clock, and they go through the wash constantly. That's where well-made, breathable fabric earns its keep. Everything we make is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton: soft from the first wear, made without chlorine bleach or harsh chemical finishes, and sturdy enough to be handed on to the next baby. Common questions

How many sleepsuits does a newborn need?

Six to eight is enough for most families if you wash every two or three days. Babies can go through several a day when nappies leak or milk comes back up, so add a couple more if you don't wash often.

What size clothes should I buy for a newborn?

Most full-term babies wear 0–3 months from birth. If your baby is expected to be over about 3.5kg, 0–3 months may only last a few weeks, so buy a few pieces in 3–6 months too. Our baby clothes size guide has a full chart by weight and height.

When should I buy newborn essentials?

Many parents aim to have the essentials ready, washed and packed by around 34–36 weeks, with the car seat fitted and the hospital bag packed, in case the baby arrives early.

Do I need to wash new baby clothes before use?

It's a good idea. A gentle wash at 30°C with a non-bio, fragrance-free detergent removes any dust or residue from manufacturing and storage and softens the fabric.
