Autumn Baby & Toddler Wardrobe Essentials for 2026

There’s a week every October when you leave the house in a T-shirt and come home wishing you’d brought a coat. Dressing a baby or toddler for that kind of weather comes down to layers, and to owning a few of the right ones rather than a drawer full of the wrong ones.

This is our list of autumn baby clothes essentials for 2026. It’s sorted by age, it’s built for the UK’s very changeable autumn, and nothing on it is here just to look nice in a photo. (Although most of it does.)

Soft layers that keep up with them, from the park to the pushchair to someone’s kitchen floor.

The three-layer rule for autumn

Most days, three thin layers beat one thick one. You can add or peel them off as the day changes, and the air trapped between layers keeps a little one warmer than sheer bulk does.

  1. Base layer. A short- or long-sleeved organic cotton bodysuit or vest. It sits against their skin all day, so this is where soft, breathable, GOTS certified cotton matters most.
  2. Middle layer. A babygrow, or a top with leggings or joggers. The outfit everyone actually sees.
  3. Top layer. A cardigan, hoodie or sweatshirt for going in and out, then a pramsuit or coat when it’s properly cold.

A rule of thumb lots of parents use: dress your baby in one more layer than you’re comfortable in. Then check the back of their neck or their tummy, not their hands. Cool hands are normal. A hot, sweaty neck means a layer needs to come off.

Autumn wardrobe essentials by age

Tap your child’s age to see what we’d actually buy, and what we’d leave on the shelf.

0–6 months

Newborns spend most of autumn in a pram, a sling or someone’s arms, so think soft, warm and quick to change.

Skip: jeans, anything with lots of tiny buttons, and outfits that only work for one occasion.

6–18 months

Crawling, cruising, first steps. Knees take a beating and nappies need room.

  • Bodysuits underneath, still. Our Star & Moon Cow two-pack makes an easy autumn base.
  • 3–4 pairs of leggings or harem joggers with space for a nappy
  • A few long-sleeved tops or playsuits
  • A cardigan or hoodie that opens all the way down, so it goes on without a wrestle
  • Warm socks, or soft shoes for new walkers

Skip: stiff shoes before they’re walking confidently outside, and chunky jumpers that stop them crawling.

18 months–3 years

Toddlers run hot, then suddenly don’t. Layers that come off fast are your best friend.

Skip: a heavy winter coat in October. A hoodie under a waterproof shell handles most autumn days.

3–6 years

Bigger kids have opinions. Let them choose the print and you choose the fabric.

  • 2–3 sweatshirts in prints they love (it’s the only way they’ll keep a layer on)
  • Joggers with a proper waistband for climbing frames
  • A light waterproof that fits over a hoodie
  • Hat, gloves and a snood for cold school-run mornings

Skip: anything that has to be ironed. Nobody has time for that in October.

Not sure which size to buy for the season? Our baby clothes size guide explains when it’s worth sizing up.

Base, middle, top. Most autumn days don’t need anything more.

What would you put on?

Three very normal autumn days. Have a guess, then tap to see what we’d do.

10°C, dry and bright. A walk to the shops with a four-month-old in the pram.

Bodysuit, sleepsuit and cardigan, then a pramsuit or a blanket tucked over the top, plus a soft hat. Take the hat and outer layer off as soon as you’re inside, even if you’re only popping into a warm shop for ten minutes.

15°C and drizzly. A toddler, a playground and a lot of running.

T-shirt, hoodie, joggers and a waterproof. Leave the thick coat at home, because they’ll overheat in five minutes and then refuse to wear anything at all. Pack a spare top for after the wet slide.

8°C at drop-off, 17°C by pick-up. A full day at nursery.

Long-sleeved tee, sweatshirt and joggers, with a coat for the walk there. Label everything. The coat will come home on a different child at least once this term.

Car seats: take off puffy coats and pramsuits before you strap in. Thick padding can stop the harness fitting snugly. Buckle them in thinner layers, then tuck a blanket over the top.

A hoodie over a tee, and wellies that can take a puddle. Most of October, sorted.

Autumn nights and baby sleeping bags

Once the heating starts clicking on and off at odd hours, bedtime gets harder to judge. A baby sleeping bag takes most of the guesswork away, because there’s no loose blanket to kick off or pull up.

TOG is simply a measure of warmth. As a rough guide for UK bedrooms:

Room temperature Sleeping bag Underneath
16–20°C 2.5 TOG Bodysuit plus a long-sleeved sleepsuit
20–24°C 1 TOG Bodysuit or a light sleepsuit
Above 24°C 0.5 TOG, or none Short-sleeved bodysuit

Guides vary a little from brand to brand, so check the label on yours. For most autumn bedrooms that means a 2.5 TOG bag. Ours come in Peacock and Cow prints, made from the same GOTS certified organic cotton as everything else we make.

Safe sleep: no hats or hoods in bed, baby on their back, and a room temperature of 16–20°C is ideal. The Lullaby Trust has clear, free guidance if you want to check anything.

Your autumn baby wardrobe checklist

Tick off what you already have. Whatever’s left is your shopping list, and it’s probably shorter than you’d think.

Already got plenty? Before you buy more, have a look at our baby capsule wardrobe guide. Fewer pieces in colours that go together means every layer works with every other one. And if last autumn’s clothes are now too small, our Pre-Loved page explains how to pass them on.

Why organic cotton works so well for autumn layering

Cotton breathes. That matters more in autumn than you might expect, because a toddler can go from a cold pavement to a hot car to a stuffy café inside an hour, and synthetic fabrics trap the sweat in between. GOTS certified organic cotton is also processed without chlorine bleach or formaldehyde finishes, which is good news for the layer that’s on their skin all day. Here’s what GOTS certified actually means if you want the detail.

It lasts, too, as long as it’s washed kindly. Cool washes and no fabric softener go a long way, and our guide to washing organic cotton baby clothes covers the rest.

Common questions

What should a baby wear in autumn in the UK?

On most autumn days, three layers: a bodysuit, a babygrow or top and leggings, and a cardigan or hoodie. Add a pramsuit or blanket and a soft hat when you head outside on colder days, and take them off again once you’re indoors.

How many layers should a baby wear at 10 degrees?

Usually a bodysuit, a sleepsuit or outfit, a cardigan, and then a pramsuit or blanket plus a hat for time outdoors. Check the back of their neck to see if they’re too warm or too cool.

What TOG sleeping bag should a baby use in autumn?

In a bedroom between 16°C and 20°C, a 2.5 TOG sleeping bag over a bodysuit and sleepsuit suits most babies. If the room is warmer, drop to a 1 TOG bag or fewer layers underneath.

Can my baby wear a coat in the car seat?

It’s best not to. Thick coats and pramsuits can stop the harness sitting snugly. Take the coat off, strap your baby in wearing thinner layers, and put a blanket over the top of the harness.

When should I buy autumn clothes for my baby?

Late August to September is ideal, before the first cold snap. If your baby is close to the next size, buy that size, since autumn clothes need to last through to spring.
