5 Easy Ways to Help Protect our Environment

Sam Mulroe

Today is World Environment Day, the perfect day to start teaching our little ones about the importance of the environment and what we can do to protect it 🌍

To celebrate, we’ve put together some super easy ways you and your family can start helping the planet today.

1. Avoid single-use plastic

Every year, more than 10 million tonnes of plastic end up in the sea, disrupting ecosystems and causing harm to marine life. Help save our oceans by avoiding single-use plastic, and investing in reusable alternatives, such as reusable water bottles, coffee cups and shopping bags.

2. Support eco-conscious brands

Try to shop from brands that are making efforts to help protect the environment. Perhaps they plant a tree for every purchase you make, or organise beach clean ups to tackle plastic pollution…by supporting these types of brands, you are supporting the planet.

3. Reduce, reuse and recycle

Become more eco-conscious by following the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! This means reducing waste products, reusing items so they don’t end up in landfill, and recycling certain materials so they can be made into other things!

Did you know that...beyond cardboard, tin and glass, it’s now possible to recycle all sorts of household items, including dental products, contact lenses and medicine blister packets? Check out TerraCycle to find out more.

4. Raise eco warriors

Encourage your little ones to ‘go green’ and help raise the next generation of eco warriors. Whether that’s reminding them to turn off the tap while brushing their teeth, or encouraging them to put their litter in the bin at the park, the sooner our little ones practise eco-friendly habits, the more likely they are to continue these habits in the future.

5. Pass pre-loved items along

Hand-me-downs are great. Help the environment by passing pre-loved items along to friends and family or selling them online. This prevents old clothes, toys and other products from being sent to landfill, giving them a new lease of life!
